Ready,
Set,
Read!

One of KHS's goals is that all students will show reading growth (comprehension and vocabulary) by one full grade level by the end of this school year.  So, to help you on your learning and reading journey, KHS is sponsoring a reading raffle.
  • The Grand Prize:  One of the bikes in the photos below! (Since we have two bikes, there will be two Grand Prize winners.)
  • Other Prizes include:  movie passes and gift certificates to Bestseller, McDonalds, Subway and a few movie passes.

How Do You "Get" a Raffle Ticket?

Well, earning a raffle ticket takes 3 steps:
  1. Check out a book from the Kagman High Library.
  2. Read the book.
  3. Prove you’ve read the book!

How do you prove you've read the book?  Choose one of the following:

Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down:   Each student writes a review of the book he or she just finished reading -- in the style of a movie review. The student concludes by awarding a thumbs up or thumbs down on the book. (Reviews must be at least one page typed, double spaced with 12 pt font)
                                                    OR
Be an Artist:  Create your own Book Cover/Jacket for the Book that is creative, colorful and includes title, author and a short synopsis (plot) of the book.
                                                     OR
Book Talk.   Make an appointment with Mrs. Ornes, your librarian, to sit down and discuss the book for a few minutes.
                                                     OR
Ten Facts. Each student creates a "Ten Facts About [book title]" sheet that lists ten facts he or she learned from reading the book. The facts, written in complete sentences, must include details the student didn't know before reading the book.
                                                     OR
Create a comic strip of an important or favorite part of the book.
                                                     OR
Summarize:  Write a one page summary of the book.  Summaries must be at least one page typed, double spaced with 12 pt font.)

                                                     OR
Come up with your own idea and talk it over with Mrs. Ornes

Start Reading Now; Contest Ends December 19th!
Students may earn up to 12 raffle tickets (one book/week)
Questions?  Stop by the library and ask Mrs. Ornes or email her at maria.ornes@kagmanhigh.org

A Big THANK YOU to Mr. VanGils for the idea and for help organizing the raffle!

Social bookmarking is a method for Internet users to store, organize, search, and manage bookmarks of webpages.  In a social bookmarking system, users save links to webpage that they want to remember and/or share. Most social bookmark services encourage users to organize their bookmarks with informal tags.

Why Would Students Use Social Bookmarking?
  • To keep track of important links for their projects
  • To organize links for various projects or classes
  • To share links with fellow students
  • To share links with your teachers

Check out the video below to learn more about social bookmarking.

Having Fun with Mashpedia

My new favorite research tool is mashpedia.  Essentially mashpedia gathers information from a variety of sources and brings it all together in a unified entry.  It will definitely save you time, so check it out it.

What Should I Read Next?
Imagine you just finished a great book and would like to read another one that is similar.  How do you find the book?  Well, try What Should I Read Next.  All you have to do is type in the name of an author, or a title of a book that you loved, and the website generates a list of titles that are similar in genre and feel. It is fun to use and it might help you find your next book.  Give it a go.

    Need Some Help?

    Your Librarian

After teaching for 20 years, Mrs. Ornes decided to try something new and different - like being a librarian! She took some online classes, earned a Masters in Information Science, and feels extremely fortunate be starting off her 7th year at KHS.
