The Northern Marianas Humanities Council invites public and private high schools to participate in the 17th Annual Valentine N. Sengebau Poetry Competition on Monday, October 11, 2021 at 6:00 p.m. at Marianas High School.
Each school is allowed to select up to two performance acts to partake in the senior division competition. Students may perform as a solo act or as a duo. A duo will be considered a single entry and any prizes won will be shared equally. All schools must register participants via the attached form. Deadline for registration submission is September 24th at 3:00 p.m. Please send completed registration forms to Andrew Roberto’s email ([email protected])
Senior division students will be judged on their ability to write and perform an original poem. The content and performance scores are judged separately and tallied together at the end of the competition. Please note that content brings in more total points than performance. Senior division participants must submit original poems for content judging by October 1st to Andrew Roberto’s email. Performances are scheduled for recital and judging on October 11th.
During content judging, judges will examine poems with a particular focus on symbolism, metaphor, and imagery. Poems must address themes relating to culture, identity, and/or change in the Northern Mariana Islands. Poems may not exceed 250 words. Submissions must be typewritten in Times New Roman or other similar font. Student names, grades, school affiliation, and contact numbers should appear on the top right corner of the page.
After content judging has taken place, participants will then recite their poems during final competition at the Marianas High School cafeteria. The Council will subsidize travel costs for Rota and Tinian students and chaperones.
Recitals will be scored by a second panel of judges. Combined content and recital scores will determine first through third place finishes. Related scoring rubrics are available, detailing judges expectations.
Winners will be announced at the conclusion of the final competition. First place finishers will have their name(s) and school inscribed on perpetual trophies that will be housed at the winning campus until next year’s competition. Cash prizes will also be awarded.
For additional information, contact the Council’s Program Coordinator, Andrew Roberto, via email at [email protected].
_____
The late Valentine Sengebau spent the last twenty‐five years of his life in his adopted home of Saipan. The Palauan poet composed dozens of poems that were published in the Micronesian Reporter and the Marianas Variety. Sengebau’s poetry expressed the joys and sorrows of his life, his concerns regarding loss of cultural identity in the islands, as well as the political negotiations between the United States and Micronesia. To ensure that his work is enjoyed by future generations, the Northern Marianas Humanities Council published an anthology of Sengebau’s poetry, Microchild, in 2004. The annual Valentine Sengebau Poetry Competition was established to support the work of young Micronesian poets and to honor Sengebau’s legacy as one of Micronesia’s foremost poets.
The Northern Marianas Humanities Council is a private, non‐governmental corporation established in the CNMI in 1991. Its mission is to foster awareness, understanding and appreciation of the humanities through support for educational programs that relate the humanities to the indigenous cultures and the intellectual needs and interests of the people of the Commonwealth
